Workshop 32 — “Naima”: Pedal Points, Slash Chords, Upper-Structure Harmony, and Hearing Vertical Color Over a Stable Bass
After “Giant Steps,” this workshop deliberately slows the harmonic clock down.
The difficulty is no longer:
Can I relocate to a new key fast enough?
Instead:
Can I understand a chord whose bass says one thing while the upper notes seem to belong somewhere else?
“Naima” is an excellent laboratory for:
- pedal-point harmony
- slash chords
- upper structures
- ambiguous chord identity
- common-tone voice leading
- chords whose function is primarily color, not progression
- melody as an extension of the harmony
- separating bass from upper harmony mentally
- creating enormous harmonic richness with very little physical movement
The central lesson is:
The bass note and the upper chord do not always need to agree about what the “root” is.
