32.104Applying it to “Happy Birthday”

We can now perform another Nahre-Sol-style transformation.

Take the familiar melody.

Instead of giving every melody note an ordinary chord:

Phrase 1

tonic pedal with slowly changing upper structures.

Phrase 2

keep one RH triad but move bass.

Phrase 3

climax with a distant slash sonority.

Final phrase

sus → dominant → tonic.

The melody stays almost unchanged.

Yet the harmonic environment becomes modern, spacious, and sophisticated.
