Workshop 89 — Independent Clocks at the Piano: Separating Bass Time, Chord Time, Melody Time, and Phrase Time Without Losing the Groove

Workshop 88 focused on harmonic memory—the fact that earlier sounds continue influencing what later harmony means.

Now we move from harmonic memory into something intensely practical at the keyboard:

How do you make the left hand, accompaniment, melody, and improvised phrase behave like independent musicians instead of one synchronized pair of hands?

This is one of the major differences between:

playing piano notes

and:

making the piano sound like an ensemble.

A common intermediate habit is:

all happening together.

That creates clarity, but eventually the music can feel:

Today we separate four clocks:

  1. metric clock — where the beat actually is
  2. bass clock — when the bass moves
  3. harmony/comping clock — when chordal information attacks
  4. melodic phrase clock — when melodic ideas begin, continue, breathe, and resolve

The central lesson is:

Good rhythmic independence does not mean the parts disagree about the beat. It means they agree on where the beat is strongly enough that they no longer have to touch it at the same time.
