Workshop 90 — Rhythmic Motif Development: Turning One Tiny Rhythm into a Whole Solo, Accompaniment Language, and Arrangement Identity
Workshop 89 separated the piano into independent rhythmic clocks:
- bass time
- harmony time
- melody time
- phrase time
Now we focus on the opposite problem.
Once those layers are independent, how do we keep the result from sounding rhythmically random?
The answer is:
rhythmic motifs.
Just as a 3-note melodic cell can unify a solo, a tiny rhythmic cell can unify:
- melody
- fills
- comping
- bass
- interludes
- tags
- transitions
- even whole sections
The central lesson is:
Listeners often recognize rhythmic identity more strongly than pitch identity. A good rhythm can survive chord changes, key changes, register changes, and even changes of musical role.
