Workshop 112 — Composing Texture and Register: Turning the Piano into an Ensemble, Controlling Density, and Making the Same Notes Feel Like Different Music
Workshop 111 focused on harmonic rhythm—when harmony changes, when it waits, and how pacing shapes form.
Now we move to another dimension that can transform a piece almost as dramatically as harmony:
texture.
You can keep:
- the same melody
- the same chords
- the same bass
- the same tempo
and make the music feel completely different simply by changing:
- which voices are present
- where they sit on the keyboard
- how many notes sound at once
- whether the texture is open or compressed
- whether lines move independently or together
- which layer is foreground
- whether resonance is dry or sustained
This is where solo piano becomes orchestration.
The central lesson is:
Texture is not decoration added after the composition. Texture determines what the listener is able to hear as foreground, background, space, weight, intimacy, and climax.
