Workshop 35 — “Stella by Starlight”: Ambiguous Function, Deceptive Resolutions, Local Key Centers, and Navigating When the Harmony Refuses to Behave
This workshop is a different kind of difficulty.
In “Giant Steps,” the destinations were far apart but very explicit.
In “Stella,” the harder question is:
What if the chord progression contains dominants, half-diminished chords, and local cadences—but the destination is not always where textbook harmony tells you it “should” go?
This is where you stop treating harmony as a set of rules and start treating it as evidence.
The main lessons are:
- ambiguous harmonic function
- dominants that do not resolve conventionally
- local tonicization versus structural tonic
- half-diminished chords outside obvious minor ii–V–i patterns
- deceptive and delayed resolution
- guide-tone lines as more reliable evidence than Roman numerals
- reducing complex harmony to tension zones and arrival zones
- improvising through uncertain harmony without scale panic
