  1. Texture is the organization and interaction of simultaneous musical roles—melody, bass, inner harmony, counterpoint, rhythmic patterns, resonance, and doubling. It describes not merely what notes exist but how musical layers coexist and relate.
  2. Ten notes moving as one chordal block may function as a single perceptual layer, while three independent melodic voices demand much more attention. Density therefore includes independence, rhythmic activity, register, and role complexity, not just the number of keys depressed.
