109.1The basic transition problem

Imagine:

A section: C major, lyrical, legato.

B section: E♭ major, syncopated, dry.

You could simply stop A and begin B.

That might work.

But if you want continuity, something must explain:

  • key change
  • rhythmic change
  • textural change
  • register change
  • emotional change

You do not necessarily need to explain all of them separately.

One musical gesture may bridge several.
