Whenever you see a chord outside the key, ask:

Why is this chord chromatic?

Possible answers:

  • secondary dominant
  • borrowed chord
  • passing diminished
  • chromatic mediant
  • modulation
  • altered dominant
  • voice-leading decoration

That question will eventually let you decode complex chord charts quickly.
