spread the chord:

C-G-E'–G'

or:

C-G-C'-E'

This produces a much wider sound.

Try:

LH: C-G

RH: E-G-C

Then for Am:

LH: A-E

RH: A-C-E

The low fifth creates a spacious accompaniment.
