Suppose melody is on top:

C

and chord underneath is Am:

E-A-C

You can move inner notes while holding the melody.

For example:

E-A-C

then:

F-A-C

then back.

The listener hears C as sustained melody while harmony subtly changes.

This is the beginning of richer arrangement.
