This sounds obvious, but it is one of the most important practical skills.

When you play melody + accompaniment:

melody should project

accompaniment should support.

Try playing:

RH melody at mezzo-forte

LH accompaniment at piano

Even when the accompaniment pattern is technically more complicated, it should not become the musical focus.
