12.4Tonicization versus modulation
Tonicization
A brief emphasis on another chord.
Example:
C → E7 → Am → Dm → G7 → C
Am gets special emphasis, but C remains the main home.
Modulation
A more substantial change where the new key becomes the real tonal center.
We'll study modulation later.
For now:
Secondary dominant = usually temporary tonicization.
