12.38Secondary dominants do not have to include 7th
You may also see:
E → Am
instead of E7.
The major triad itself still contains:
G♯ → A
and creates dominant pull.
But:
E7 → Am
usually has stronger functional character.
So secondary dominant can be V or V7; V7 is especially clear.
