If you're arranging freely, you may even modify a melody slightly to accommodate the richer harmony.

For example:

G → G♯ → A

over:

C → E7 → Am.

This can sound very natural if the melody allows ornamentation.

But don't change a recognizable melody casually unless the style supports it.
