When you hear unfamiliar harmony:

listen for clues that the key changed:

  • persistent accidental
  • new dominant
  • recurring new tonic
  • phrase cadences on a different note
  • bass settling elsewhere

Do not assume every chromatic chord is a modulation.

Look for confirmation.
