A typical Afro-Cuban bass approach does not simply hammer roots on beat 1.

One of the characteristic concepts is:

anticipating harmonic destinations before the downbeat.

Let's build a simplified practice pattern.

Stay on C minor.

LH:

G on beat 2

C on 4&.

Then hold C through next beat 1.

So:

the tonic bass arrives before the next bar.
