28.98Connection to “Happy Birthday”
Now take our original laboratory melody.
Instead of traditional C major harmony:
put it over a D Dorian-style vamp after transposing appropriately.
Or make it C Dorian:
C D E♭ F G A B♭.
Keep melody recognizable but alter major 3rd where necessary.
Use:
C pedal
quartal voicings
one rhythmic ostinato.
Suddenly “Happy Birthday” becomes a modal jazz performance without requiring elaborate chord substitution.
That is a major Nahre-Sol-style transformation:
change the harmonic system itself, not merely the chords.
