Homework for Module 21

A. One progression, five versions

Start:

C | Am | Dm | G7 | C

Create:

  1. plain triads
  2. seventh/extension version
  3. secondary-dominant version
  4. diminished version
  5. borrowed-chord version

Record all five.

B. Functional substitutions

In C, substitute:

  • C with Am or Em
  • F with Dm
  • G7 with B°7

Play each substitution in a phrase, not by itself.

C. Stronger destinations

For each target, play:

F

C → F C7 → F Gm7 → C7 → F

Gm7 → C7 → F

G

D → G D7 → G Am7 → D7 → G

Am7 → D7 → G

Dm

A → Dm A7 → Dm Em7♭5 → A7 → Dm

Hear the increasing preparation.

D. Bass-line reharmonization

Use melody note E and bass:

C → B → A → G → F → E

C → B → A → G → F → E

Find plausible chords.

Do not worry about finding one “correct” answer.

E. Chromatic inner lines

Create progressions supporting:

G → G♯ → A

G → G♯ → A

C → C♯ → D

C → C♯ → D

A → A♭ → G

A → A♭ → G

Then use those notes as melody or inner voices.

F. Borrowed iv

Take three simple major-key cadences and insert:

IV → iv → I

IV → iv → I

Transpose it.

G. Passing diminished

Insert:

#I°7

between I and ii in three keys.

Then:

#IV°7

between IV and V.

H. Repeated phrase

Take a melody with a repeated phrase.

First time: simple harmony.

Second time: reharmonize with one secondary dominant and one borrowed chord.

Keep the melody clear.
