21.38Reharmonization and melody tension
Suppose melody is G.
Chord E7 contains:
E G♯ B D.
G natural is not a basic chord tone.
But over E7, G can function as:
♯9
That may be great in blues/jazz.
So “does not belong to chord” does not automatically mean “wrong.”
The question is:
Is this tension stylistically and functionally convincing?
