For a real melody:

Step 1

Play the original melody alone.

Step 2

Write/find basic harmony.

Step 3

Mark structural melody notes.

Step 4

Mark phrase functions and cadences.

Step 5

Choose one reharmonization goal.

Example: “make second phrase darker.”

Step 6

Try only one technique.

Maybe borrowed iv.

Step 7

Voice-lead smoothly.

Step 8

Check melody clashes.

Step 9

Play entire phrase, not just chord transition.

Step 10

Keep it only if the phrase improved.
