18.43Scale choice should serve the target
Suppose G7 → C and your target is E.
You could simply play:
F → E
No scale question required.
Or:
E♭ → F → E
Now E♭ is an altered dominant tension.
You have already created an “altered” sound using melodic logic rather than scale memorization.
This is often the more musical way to learn.
