18.2This is why “one scale per chord” can be misleading

You may see:

Dm7 = D Dorian

G7 = G Mixolydian

Cmaj7 = C Ionian

Technically correct.

But:

D Dorian:

C Ionian:

C D E F G A B

C D E F G A B

Same seven notes.

So if the progression is entirely diatonic to C, you do not need to mentally switch three scales.

Instead:

Think C major, but hear each changing chord.
