Here is a more interesting idea.

Over Dm7 in C major, you could use:

C major pentatonic

C D E G A

Relative to Dm:

C = 7

D = root

E = 9

G = 11

A = 5

No F, so you omit the minor 3rd.

This produces a more open sound.
