Improvisation should also have punctuation.

Instead of endlessly running notes, create:

2-bar idea → pause

then:

2-bar answer → pause

Try over:

C | Am | Dm | G7 | C

First phrase ends before G7.

Second phrase resolves on C.

This alone can make improvisation sound far more musical.
