Suppose basic phrase is:

C → F → G7 → C

You can expand it:

C → Am → Dm → G7 → C

Then further:

C → E7 → Am → A7 → Dm → G7 → C

The destination remains C.

But the route becomes longer and richer.

This is exactly how reharmonization often works.
