6.10Antecedent and consequent
A very useful classical concept:
antecedent = first phrase, often somewhat open
consequent = answering phrase, often more conclusive
Think:
question → answer
Example:
Phrase 1:
C | F | C | G
ends on V.
Question.
Phrase 2:
C | F | G7 | C
ends on I.
Answer.
This kind of organization appears constantly in classical music, folk songs, standards, hymns, and pop.
