During classic swing choruses:

keep melody straightforward.

During solo:

C-major areas: use C major pentatonic.

For more modern tonic color: D major pentatonic over C.

Dominants: altered pentatonic fragments.

Then return to the original melody with ordinary swing vocabulary.

This is an excellent way to make one solo chorus sound contemporary without modernizing the entire arrangement.
