7.9Why major-chord 11 is trickier

Over C major:

F is 11.

But F clashes strongly with E, the major 3rd.

So if melody is F over C harmony, you might:

  • treat it as suspension
  • omit E temporarily
  • use Csus
  • reinterpret harmony

Do not simply pile F on top of E and assume “Cmaj11” is automatically elegant.
