7.2The melody must sing

Before harmony:

play the melody alone.

Shape it like a vocalist.

Ask:

• where does the phrase breathe?
• which notes are expressive arrivals?
• where does the line lean forward?
• where should it relax?

If the melody alone sounds mechanical, adding 9ths and 13ths will not help.
