7.2The melody must sing
Before harmony:
play the melody alone.
Shape it like a vocalist.
Ask:
- where does the phrase breathe?
- which notes are expressive arrivals?
- where does the line lean forward?
- where should it relax?
If the melody alone sounds mechanical, adding 9ths and 13ths will not help.
