Homework for Module 19
A. Tonic recognition
Choose C, G, F, D.
For each:
- play the major scale
- improvise a few random notes
- stop
- sing tonic
- verify
B. Scale degrees
In each of those keys, sing and play:
1-3-5-3-1
1-4-3-2-1
1-6-5-3-2-1
7-1
4-3
C. Simple melodies by ear
Without sheet music, find:
- Twinkle
- Ode to Joy
- Happy Birthday
Write scale degrees, not note names.
D. Transposition
Take one of them and play it in:
C, G, F, B♭
without relearning it from scratch.
E. Sing before play
For every note of one short phrase:
sing the next note before touching the keyboard.
No random searching.
F. Drone practice
Hold C in LH.
RH improvise/sing degrees:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
Listen to each note's relationship to C.
Repeat over G.
G. Degree identification
Have someone—or a random method of your choice—pick a C-major note.
Play tonic first, then that note.
Try to identify its scale degree before looking.
H. Internal hearing
Play C.
Imagine:
E
then verify.
Imagine:
G
verify.
Imagine:
B
verify.
Then do the same in G major.
I. One familiar melody
Choose a song you know extremely well but have never played from sheet music.
Find only its first 4–8 bars.
Write:
- scale degrees
- rhythm roughly
- phrase endings
Then transpose.
