17.15Suspension

A suspension is a particularly strong delayed resolution.

Example:

G7 → C

Melody has F over G7.

When C arrives, keep F temporarily.

Then:

F → E

So:

F was consonant in G7,

then becomes tension over C,

then resolves.

This is one of the most expressive melodic devices in tonal music.
