17.1Start with a plain melody

Take something simple in C major:

E – F – G – E – D – C

Play it very plainly.

Now ask:

• Which notes feel structurally important?
• Which notes can be approached?
• Which notes can be delayed?
• Where can I repeat or decorate?

The original melody remains recognizable because the main landmarks stay intact.
