16.21Chord-scale thinking comes second

In C major ii-V-I:

Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

all three are compatible with:

C D E F G A B

C D E F G A B

You could label:

  • D Dorian
  • G Mixolydian
  • C Ionian

But they are the same seven notes.

So thinking three scale names often complicates something simple.

For now:

Use C-major material, but change your targets as the chords change.
