If you see:

Am7 → D7

ask:

D7 wants G.

Is Am7 the ii of G?

Yes.

So likely:

ii–V in G

Even if G does not immediately arrive.

Likewise:

Em7 → A7

suggests D.

Gm7 → C7

suggests F.

This becomes a powerful reading skill.
