A particularly useful improvisation exercise:

On every new chord, land on its 3rd.

Dm7:

land on F

G7:

land on B

Cmaj7:

land on E

So your target line is:

F → B → E

Now approach those targets from nearby notes.

This teaches you to hear chord changes melodically.
