In C major, D7 contains F♯, which is outside the C-major scale.
But:
D7 → G7
makes perfect functional sense.
Because D7 is:
V7/V
“the dominant of the dominant.”
Likewise:
E7 → Am
is:
V7/vi
These will become central in Module 12.
