Hold a C major harmony.

Try creating this inner line:

G → G♯ → A

while changing chords:

C → E7 → Am

Example:

C: C E G

E7: B D E G♯

Am: A C E

The chromatic motion:

G → G♯ → A

creates direction.

This is exactly the logic behind secondary dominants.
