7.21Chord tones and extensions

Suppose melody note D over C harmony.

Basic C triad:

C E G

C E G

D is not in it.

But if we interpret it as:

Cadd9

Cadd9 = C E G D

then D is an extension.

Later we'll formalize this.

For now, hear that:

C + D melody

is not automatically a clash.

This will prevent you from rejecting perfectly good harmonizations.
