  1. Dissonance describes a relationship among pitches; tension describes the listener’s expectation that something is incomplete, unstable, delayed, intensified, or moving toward a future event. A consonant harmony can be tense if it delays an expected change, while a dissonant/modal sonority can feel completely stable if the piece has established it as home.
  2. Rhythm, meter, register, density, texture, dynamics, silence, phrase length, formal delay, bass absence, melodic tendency tones, ambiguity, and duration can all create tension without chromatic harmony.

The art is not merely creating tension—it is deciding exactly which expectation to keep alive, and how long the music can afford to make the listener wait.
