77.97Mini-composition exercise
Write a 32-bar solo étude over a moderately active jazz progression.
Requirements:
- identify no more than 8 structural harmonic landmarks
- at least one five-chord passage reduced to a single guide-tone path
- one secondary dominant treated as an arrow toward its destination
- one passing diminished receiving only a brief melodic acknowledgment
- one tritone-sub dominant treated as part of the same larger dominant region
- one common-tone line surviving three chords
- one temporary tonicization
- one motif continuing through that tonicization
- one phrase that ignores an intermediate tonic cadence
- one passage where altered tension appears only at the most important dominant
- one intentional two-bar silence followed by recovery at the next landmark
- final phrase planned from its destination backward
The étude should feel easier to navigate after reduction than the chord chart initially suggests.
