6.8Hear the dominant destination first

Regardless of how you label the preceding diminished-quality chord:

G7 → Cmaj7

is unmistakably:

V → I

in C.

That gives us the destination.

Then the Dm7♭5 functions as a predominant color leading into G7.

So think:

predominant → dominant → C major.
