5.23Progressions are like grammar

Compare these random chords:

C → F♯m → E♭ → Bm

They may be usable in some context, but there is no immediately obvious common-key functional logic.

Now:

C → Am → Dm → G7 → C

This feels coherent because each chord has a recognizable role.

That doesn't mean music must obey textbook function.

But functional harmony gives you a reliable grammar.

You can break grammar later on purpose.
