Voice leading becomes especially attractive when bass and melody move in opposite directions.

Example:

Bass:

C → B → A → G

Top voice:

E → G → A → B

One goes down.

The other goes up.

This creates a sense of independence.

Classical harmony uses this constantly.

Jazz arrangers do too.
