Focus only on two notes:

G♯ → A

and:

D → C

One rises by semitone.

One falls by whole step.

Now compare with:

Em → Am

G → A

There is much less pull.

Your ear should start recognizing:

G♯ = gravity toward A

just as:

B = gravity toward C

in C major.
