Do not treat this as a virtuosity exercise.

Play slowly enough that you can say the scale degrees.

C major:

C D E F G A B C

Say:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1

Then G:

G A B C D E F♯ G

Again:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1

Then D:

D E F♯ G A B C♯ D

The point is to connect:

finger → sound → note name → scale degree

Speed is irrelevant for now.
