  1. Because familiar keys produce automatic hand shapes, voicings, melodic patterns, and bass movements. Those automatic solutions may sound like intentional style even when they are partly physical habit. Moving to an unfamiliar key exposes whether you actually understand the underlying relationships.

  2. Literal transposition moves every pitch by the same interval. Functional transposition preserves harmonic roles—such as ii–V–I, borrowed iv→I, or a chromatic bass approach—even when voicing, inversion, register, or exact surface realization changes to suit the new key.
