75.101Apply it to “Mack the Knife”

Do not distort the main statement.

Use intervallic material in:

  • solo chorus
  • interlude
  • fills between phrases

A good architecture:

first solo phrase: mostly swing/chord-tone language.

Second: fourths/sixths.

Third: octave displacement.

Fourth: short altered intervallic dominant line.

Then return to the melody plainly.

The contrast makes the modern material much stronger.
