For any tune, make three versions:

A. Simple

melody + bass + basic harmony.

B. Medium

smooth voicings + extensions + fills.

C. Advanced

reharmonization + counterpoint + transformation.

Then compare.

Often you'll want to combine mostly A and B, with only moments from C.

That is good arranging.
