Eventually, you should be able to hear a tune and think:

“What happens if I keep the pitch contour but make the phrase 5/4?”

or:

“What if I keep the melody almost literal but put a 3+3+2 ostinato under it?”

or:

“What if I stretch the first phrase and compress the second?”

That is arranger thinking.
